EMMA Short Guide

Since its publication in 2010, the EMMA Toolkit has been widely used by donors, humanitarian organizations, governments, and academic institutions to understand the impact of emergencies on critical market systems. Although the EMMA Toolkit provides a great deal of information and direction in conducting an emergency market assessment, a set of guidance notes is handy to focus attention towards key information or resources within the larger EMMA book. As such, the purpose of these EMMA Guidance Notes is to:

  1. Provide a condensed overview of the EMMA process by synthesizing the key aspects of the 10 analytical steps as laid out in the EMMA Toolkit;
  2. Offer accessible references to further information in the EMMA Toolkit; and
  3. Harness learning from field experience to augment the lessons in the EMMA Toolkit.

In addition, since field practitioners are now regularly applying EMMA in slow-onset emergency contexts, simple guidance on applying EMMA in slow onset disasters is included in the Guidance Notes.

This document has been developed for EMMA leaders and EMMA team members for use during EMMA assignments and for those that would like to have a quick overview of the EMMA process.
